Self-Portrait (Pathology)

Self-Portrait (Pathology) (2024) 38" x 38" x 1"

Self-Portrait (Pathology) is constructed from slides I obtained when requesting samples of my own pathology, stored in the medical institution’s biobanks. This is part of the larger research project associated with my Cooper Hewitt exhibition, Is a biobank a home in which I attempt to track down my medical data and samples. The hand blown glass rondels reference the circular shape of the cell, the microscope's gaze, and medieval religious architecture. The leaded glass form attempts to turn a source of pain and loss (the pathology) into something beautiful and transcendent; creating a sacred space.

With thanks to Selvin Glass for design and fabrication.
