Radical Love: Chelsea Manning

Forensic DNA phenotype portrait of Chelsea Manning with the sex parameter left "neutral" (left) and assigned female (right).

"Is it radical to seek justice? Is it radical to be rescued by love? Is it subversive to be sweet? Is it radical to be true to yourself?"

Radical Love is an homage and exploration of gender identity stereotypes in forensic DNA phenotyping. The portrait was developed in collaboration with Paper Magazine in response to whistleblower Chelsea Manning's inability to be photographed while incarcerated as a political prisoner.

Read Chelsea's interview with Holly Herndon, Mat Dryhurst, Metahaven and Jacob Appelbaum from behind bars conducted through the mail which is the only form of outside communication she is allowed. Donate to her defense fund here. See also my interview discussing the production of the portrait.

The 3d portraits of Chelsea Manning premiered at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland January 23, 2016 as part of the Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition This Time Tomorrow.

See further discussions of the project in The Guardian, Boing Boing, Studio 360 the Art newspaper and 3d Printing Industry.
